The practice of Zwaantje Kurpershoek (1998, NL) comes from an interplay between stories and physical materials, manifesting in sculptures, installations, paintings and objects. The narratives and concepts she explores come from diverse sources such as anime, games, books, personal experiences, news, myths, Christian tales, family history and mathematical practices. Materials range from personal belongings and found furniture to silicone, wax, paper, wood and metal. By using unconventional methods such as sewing paper, laser engraving ceramics and drawing with silicone, her process allows stories, materials and techniques to inform one another. She conceives her work as a form of “knotting,” weaving material and immaterial elements together without hierarchy. By knotting these elements together, she explores and uncovers the potential connections between things.
